Steelers Round 7

872. . EDGE. Horned Frogs . Ochaun Mathis. 7. player

The Steelers have seen just how needed quality edge depth is this season, as players like Taco Charlton and John Simon have been forced into playing time. While expecting a seventh-round pick to be a top backup year one is unlikely, taking one like Ochaun Mathis could yield results down the road. Mathis is the perfect build for an edge defender and has been productive while with TCU.

Pad-level and consistency are the biggest weaknesses for Mathis, but for a backup, he has plenty of traits worth developing. Mathis also has the potential to be a good special teams player given his size and athleticism. The Steelers need edge-rushing depth, and Mathis would be a good fit for what the team needs.

Tiawan Mullen. 7. player. 813. . CB. Hoosiers

One of my personal favorite picks in this mock draft, Tiawan Mullen has the makings of a great slot cornerback in the mold of Mike Hilton. He lacks size and elite athleticism to be an outside cornerback, but he is a very instinctual cornerback that relies on his knowledge of the game to make plays in coverage.

He also happens to be one of the better run-stopping and blitzing cornerbacks in this draft class. He had 3.5 sacks for Indiana last season, and he projects to continue that success at the next level. He has his limitations and can only play in the slot at the next level, but Mullen would be a great addition in a struggling secondary.

The Steelers have a lot of question marks heading into this offseason, and the draft will be key to setting up the future success of this team. There isn’t enough draft capital to fill every hole, but the larger ones are addressed. In total, the Steelers land a lot of talent for the future of this team.
