Steelers have a CB playing top-notch football

Ahkello Witherspoon has played 70-92 percent of defensive snaps in 5 of the last 6 games for the Steelers. Ironically, the only time he played less than this was against the Chiefs three weeks ago. Pittsburgh should be wise enough not to make that mistake the second time around.

In Week 16 against Kansas City, Witherspoon saw the field for just 27 defensive snaps (39 percent). This number no doubt dipped because Joe Haden was making strides as he returned from an injury. However, the Steelers ought to know that Witherspoon is the better player at this point.

Since Week 12, Ahkello has been one of the best cornerbacks in the league — earning 3 interceptions and 9 pass defenses during this span while not allowing a touchdown. On the season, Witherspoon has surrendered just a 35.1 passer rating, via Pro Football Reference — one of the very best in the league.

Though Haden is still probably more trustworthy in zone coverage, Witherspoon has elite size, length, and athletic traits that could help give the Steelers a boost against one of the most high-powered offenses in football. Pittsburgh needs to leave him on the field all game this week to help slow down Patrick Mahomes and Tyreek Hill.

The Steelers certainly have their work cut out for them this week, but these three factors should give them a much better chance to compete in their repeat matchup this year. It’s fair to expect a closer game this time around.
