Pros and Cons of the Steelers trading for Jimmy Garoppolo
Cons of trading for Garoppolo
Would a trade be worth it? Sure there are positives but do they outweigh the negatives. In this case, it’s hard to say if making this move would result in disaster or eventual success. Keep in mind that this is not an argument to secure Garoppolo, merely weighing the pros and cons of the viability of such a move.
Face it, whatever the Steelers do will upset someone. If they draft a quarterback, someone will be unhappy because this year’s draft class is worse than last year. People will be mad if the Steelers don’t take a guard or tackle. They will argue that we still won’t protect the quarterback and open holes for Najee. Then the Steelers tick someone off if they don’t trade for Aaron Rodgers. Every option comes with a risk, so the Steelers need to figure out which option poses the least risk.
A trade will cost draft capital, which may not be something the Steelers want to burn. So any trade might be too costly. How much do you sign a free agent quarterback for then? Is $20 million-plus a season acceptable? Then can the Steelers get the best rookie in the draft class if they opt to use the draft?
There is no simple fix, and there is no Trevor Lawrence they can obtain via a trade. Granted, this may not be the best solution or even the right solution. However, it does give the Steelers a season or two to plan an actual succession from Big Ben.
Whether the Steelers trade, draft, or sign someone, there may be a bunch of unhappy boos from the stand when that final decision is made. It’s a scenario of picking your own poison.
