Steelers draft: Predicting the top-5 quarterbacks on Pittsburgh’s radar
By Tommy Jaggi
3. Sam Howell, North Carolina
There was a rumor during the 2021 season that the Steelers would pick Sam Howell over Kenny Pickett if given the choice, but I’m not so sure I believe that. There’s a lot to like about Howell’s game and I believe he has more upside than Pickett, but he really isn’t a QB who should be starting from the gate.
Because of this, I think Howell might be third in line on Steelers QB prospect radar. There is a wide range of views on Howell and some NFL Draft analysts have been remarkably low on him, but I still think there are a ton of tools to work with.
Howell has an excellent arm to sail the ball down the field or put it on a rope down the seam. In addition, he can be very accurate when operating in timing and his legs are going to get him out of a lot of jams.
However, Howell does have consistency issues and he sees ghosts in the backfield at times. He’s too quick to tuck the ball and run and he takes too many sacks. The Steelers will love Howell’s youth and skill set, but they may not believe that he’s ready to make an impact right away.
