Steelers take Malik Willis without a trade-up

Even before wowing at the Senior Bowl, prominent NFL Draft analysts were really high on Liberty QB, Malik Willis. Now it seems unlikely that he can be selected without a trade-up from pick 20 in the 2022 NFL Draft.

Still, there’s always a chance the teams in front of Pittsburgh choose to go in another direction. Kenny Pickett is a quarterback who could land inside the top-15, and all it takes is for another team (or perhaps two) who would prefer a player like Matt Corral, Sam Howell, or Desmond Ridder over an incredibly raw prospect like Willis.

Their decision to do so would be the Steelers gain. Recently, NFL Draft expert Daniel Jeremiah said that everyone thinks he’s going to Pittsburgh. However, most believe a trade-up will be necessary to acquire him.

The problem with doing this is that the Steelers would be giving up additional elite draft capital to get a guy who isn’t ready to play. If he can somehow slip through the cracks and fall to Pittsburgh at pick 20, this is a scenario I instantly like much better.

It will be very interesting to see if the Steelers are willing to make a trade during the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft. Kevin Colbert hasn’t done it often, but taking a quarterback is a very big deal.
