Steelers could target Zion Johnson

Here’s another non-quarterback option for the Steelers with the 20th overall pick if Pittsburgh is open to passing on the QB position in 2022. While some might like Zion Johnson a bit more in a trade-back scenario, I think this would still be a quality pick.

Johnson is older than Kenyon Green and he doesn’t have the ability to play offensive tackle. However, he could prove to be an excellent guard at the next level and could even transition to center if the Steelers needed him there.

What Johnson does have going for him is his prototype frame, impressive footwork, and sound technique. In OL vs DL drills at the Senior Bowl, Johnson was the most impressive offensive lineman of the group for either team. At 6’2 1/2” and 314 pounds, Johnson showcased great leverage against powerful defensive tackles, and his impressive 33 7/8” arms help make sure that he stays in control at the point of attack.

Like Green, Johnson was one of the candidates on my short list of safest players in the 2022 NFL Draft for the Steelers. He’s not a flashy pick, but he should be a cornerstone offensive lineman this team could build around.
