Steelers could bring back Nelson

One of the most curious things to happen last season was the fallout between the Steelers and Steven Nelson. Coming off a good season with the team, Nelson reportedly wanted a new deal to secure his spot with the team. Pittsburgh had other plans though, as they needed more cap space, so they released the veteran defensive back. There doesn’t seem to be too much ill will between the two parties though, so perhaps a new deal could be struck between the two this offseason.

The Steelers are in need of a cornerback or two in 2022. Ahkello Witherspoon and Joe Haden both find themselves as free agents. While Haden is almost a lock to leave, Witherspoon could be brought back. That said, if the veteran wants too much or the team isn’t confident in him, they could move on without him.

Nelson, meanwhile, is coming off another fine season as a cornerback. While not a flashy name, especially in a market filled with robust talent, Nelson would be a familiar and dependable name to return to this defense. Add in him and a rookie/another free agent and the cornerback room would be set. Assuming the two sides could agree to a fair deal, this move makes a lot of sense.

The Steelers will be filling their roster out with free agents soon. While everyone will be wanting some big names, these former players could make their return to the roster in 2022. Keep these six former Steelers free agents in mind as the team gets ready for the offseason.
