Steelers would likely still have to trade up for Pickett

Selecting Kenny Pickett with the 20th overall pick is one thing. Trading up for said quarterback is an entirely different matter and one that I would not be on board with.

For starters, I won’t have any quarterback ranked inside my top-20 players this year, so the Steelers aren’t going to be getting good value no matter where they are selecting this April. I’m also not okay with mortgaging elite future draft capital for an old prospect with limited tools.

Unfortunately, it’s looking like this might have to be an option on the table if the Steelers are interested in Kenny Pickett. There are multiple teams rumored to be interested in drafting Pickett inside the top-10 this year (including the Carolina Panthers at pick 6).

Pickett is far from a perfect prospect when you consider his age, one year of respectable production, modest arm talent, and historically small hands. I can’t get behind any scenario that involves trading up for him in the 2022 NFL Draft.

The Steelers are in need of a new franchise quarterback, but Kenny Pickett might make the least amount of sense of the options Pittsburgh could pursue this year. I just don’t believe Pickett is a great fit in the black and gold.
