4 weakest Steelers starters if the season started today
By Scott Long
Anthony Miller, Slot Wide Receiver
Surprisingly, one of the thinnest positions on the Steelers roster this year is wide receiver. This position has been one of the deepest for the Steelers the last few years, however, the team lost Juju Smith-Schuster, James Washington, and Ray-Ray McCloud in free agency this year. And, while they lost three receivers, the only one they brought in was Gunner Olszewski, and he has very little experience playing anywhere other than on special teams in his NFL career, so will likely be exclusively a special teamer.
While the team does have Diontae Johnson and Chase Claypool locked in as starters on the outside, the depth chart is very thin other than that. If the season started today, Anthony Miller would be the team’s starting slot wide receiver, and while he was highly regarded coming out of college, he has not lived up to his status as a second-round draft selection. However, he does have a history with Mitchell Trubisky, having spent three years of his career with Trubisky as his quarterback, so maybe their chemistry could carry over in Pittsburgh.
Despite that, the Steelers are absolutely going to add to the wide receiver room, as the team could bring in two players, either both via the draft or one in the draft and one in free agency. The team’s depth chart is thin at this position, and with Johnson’s contract up after the year, the long-term future of the position is murky as well. Look for the Steelers to look to draft a player at wide receiver on day two, with players such as George Pickens, Christian Watson, Skyy Moore, John Metchie, and others serving as potential targets.
Ideally, the Steelers will add both a slot receiver and an outside receiver before this offseason is over. As things currently stand the slot receiver position is one of the weakest positions for the Steelers, but that doesn’t mean they won’t address both.
Clearly, the Steelers still have some holes to fill before this offseason is over. While these four positions may not all be addressed, these are the four weakest current starters on the Steelers, and if the Steelers want to be competitive they must improve upon several of these positions.
