Steelers should pursue IOL JC Tretter

I don’t care that the Steelers did spend money on Mason Cole this offseason and that they spent a third-round pick on Kendrick Green last year. Meanwhile, JC Tretter is a terrific center still sitting in free agency. Anytime you have an opportunity to make one of your worst positions one of your best with just a single move, you should do it.

Pittsburgh got atrocious play out of the center position last season. This year, it looks like the plan is to let Green and Cole battle it out to see who comes out on top. Sadly, I haven’t been impressed with either player early in their NFL careers.

Tretter, on the other hand, is a proven commodity and one of the best centers in the league, in my opinion. Though he hasn’t earned so much as a Pro Bowl appearance, he has graded out as a top-10 center in four straight seasons — earning the 6th-highest grade at the position in 2021, according to PFF.

Plugging Tretter alongside newly acquired OG James Daniels would give the Steelers a massive and noticeable improvement along the interior offensive line this year. It’s remarkable that a player like Tretter is still on the market.
