RB Mataeo Durant

Duke, 5’-11”, 196 lbs., 4.43 40-yard (Pro Day)

RB, Mataeo Durant, is a smooth runner with above-average vision and fluid change of direction. If he gets to the second level he’s a legitimate breakaway threat. At the goal line, he will put his body on the line diving over defenders. He’s a good receiver both out of the backfield and in the slot.

He has good hands and is capable of making highlight-reel catches. However, he runs upright and is lacking in power. His lack of functional power also shows up in his blocking. Though he puts in good effort he has a slim frame, his pad level is too high and his technique is bad. He’s easily overpowered by linebackers and run over by defensive linemen.

Both his running and blocking power might improve if he could be made to lower his pad level. He doesn’t look to get many yards after contact in the NFL. He requires holes at the line of scrimmage so he can utilize his speed. Given the state of the Steelers offensive line, he might have a rough go of it.

His fast Pro Day 4.43 40-yard would’ve placed him 6th among RBs at the Combine. His 35” vertical would’ve been 5th and his broad jump of 10’7” would’ve been 2nd place. In 2021 he had 255 carries for 1241 yards at 4.9 yards per with 9 TDs. He added 27 receptions for 256 yards for 9.5 yards per and 2 TDs.

After Najee Harris, the Steelers have nothing at RB and they ignored the position in the Draft. This increases Durant’s chances. He’s more of a challenger for Anthony McFarland’s RB3 spot than the legitimate every-down RB2 the Steelers are in need of. His chances depend on if he shows he can be an effective change of pace back. Also, you can never underestimate the Steelers strength and conditioning program. If Durant can put on five to ten pounds with some muscle and retain most of his speed his chances greatly improve. I think all Steelers fan’s eyes will be on Durant during the preseason.

Chances of sticking: Based on where Durant is now he’d normally only have an average chance. Given the Steelers lack of backup RBs, he has a very good chance of making the practice squad. If he has a good preseason and shows he can play with more power he might challenge for a roster spot.
