Steelers OL Chris Owens, Alabama

Chris Owens was a signing to be excited about following the draft due to his experience at multiple positions on the offensive line in college. Versatility is the one thing I look for with potential depth linemen as they can provide quality depth if anyone along the starting five goes down.

Owens started 20 games, including 12 at right tackle and one at center in 2021, according to his Steelers website biography. He was part of a high-powered Alabama offense that went to back-to-back NCAA championships and won one of them.

Owens has starting experience at both center and right tackle. He came to Alabama as an offensive guard so he also has a history of the nuances of the guard position.

The Steelers offensive line was less than stellar last season and it showed with the team finishing near the bottom of the league in rushing. Ben Roethlisberger was also sacked more times (38) in 2021 than he had been since the 2014 season (33).

Owens is a bit of a developmental player on the offensive line but, with a unit that performed as poorly as they did last season, it is one of the easier paths to a roster spot on the team. Owens’s experience at different positions could give him an edge if he can have a good camp.
