The Steelers drafted a fixture at left tackle in 1969 and ‘held the fort down’ for eleven seasons

In the third round of the 1969 NFL draft, the Steelers selected an O-lineman out of Oklahoma State who would solidify the left tackle position for eleven of the thirteen seasons in which he played. Jon Kolb was listed as 6′ 2″ and 262 lbs.  He started every game for eight consecutive years.

Like his fellow offensive lineman, Kolb was incredibly strong and possessed excellent technique.  Like Wolfley, Kolb competed in the World’s Strongest Man competition.  In the 1978 and 1979 competitions, he finished in fourth place.  According to an article from Strengthfighter, Kolb was able to bench press 500 pounds and was able to squat 600 pounds.

I remember watching both World’s Strongest Man competitions in which Kolb competed.  I can tell you that it was incredibly impressive that Kolb was able to not only hold his own but also able to beat out some of the bigger competitors.

If you have not seen the aforementioned competitions, do yourself a favor and watch them.  After you watch them, you will appreciate the pure strength that Kolb possessed.  What I could not fathom was the fact that Kolb never made a Pro Bowl.  Having watched Kolb play for about half a dozen years, I can assure you that he should have made the Pro Bowl multiple times.

Let’s see who comes in at number two on our list.
