Taylor Heinicke is the best backup option for the Steelers in free agency

Taylor Heinicke is a former undrafted free agent from the 2015 NFL Draft. He hails from Old Dominion, which is not known for being a powerhouse college program. Since entering the NFL, Heinicke has been on five different teams with a bunch of bumps in the road along the way.

It has been a long road for this quarterback as he saw his dreams of playing in this league dwindle into nothing. He took a shot at the XFL with the St. Louis BattleHawks before he got another opportunity in Washington. That is where he earned a decent chunk of starts. He started most of Washington’s games in 2021 and had a good stretch of battles this past season as well.

There is no special part to Heinicke’s game, but he plays without fear and keeps his team in games. One thing that he has proven since his stint in Washington began was the ability to keep his team in contests. This signal caller was able to keep a winning record afloat during his starts in the capital, even if things got dicey.

The Steelers could use a guy like this veteran to backup Pickett next season and potentially beyond. He seems like he will be looking for a new gig in the NFL after being benched this past year. That did come as a surprise after he led the Commanders to a winning stretch that was the best of their season.

The Steelers could be on the hunt for one or two quarterbacks this offseason if things fall a certain way. They need a veteran that can come in and potentially tutor Kenny Pickett some and be ready to start if an injury happens.
