Moats won’t work 9-5

Arthur Moats fits on the Steelers defense like one of them round pegs. He came into the league quietly, from a school not known for producing continuous NFL talent and his hard work landed him a spot with the Steelers last season after becoming a free agent.

He’s likely to start the season off at outside linebacker, depending on the progressions of Jarvis Jones and Bud Dupree through camp. He spoke to Teresa Varley during Wednesday’s OTAs where he described his hard work ethic and how he tries to impart his fundamentals to the younger guys.

"“Any time I can grab one of the young guys, bring them along with me just to show them as a professional it’s not just about while we are here on a schedule. We are not paid by hourly wages. Its salary for us to stay as long as you need to make sure you are improving yourself. I just try to get that message to those guys.” – Arthur Moats"

But who will lead them?!

The Steelers “leadership” narrative has been going on for quite some time. First it was filling the leadership void left behind by Aaron Smith and James Farrior and now ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler ponders just how the Steelers might get on without the leadership of Ike Taylor and Troy Polamalu.

That just makes me think that if the Steelers had a leadership void when Aaron Smith and James Farrior were gone, how could they now have a new leadership void without Polamalu and Taylor? Wouldn’t that have made them pretty crappy leaders back in the void-days without Smith and Farrior?

Leadership is a buzzword used mostly to describe why you think something is or isn’t working when you can’t come up with a better explanation. Just like “discipline”, “character”, and “heart”. If a team gets penalized a lot, they’re undisciplined. If a team wins in spite of some “adversity” they have “character.”

But the reality is that every last one of these guys are professional athletes, if they need some guy on their team reminding them not to suck at their jobs or be an a-hole; they’re going to fail at a lot more than football.

Here’s your leadership.

I guess Todd Haley was in the bathroom or something for his drill.
