Steelers: Could Roethlisberger win NFL MVP?

Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger of the Pittsburgh Steelers has had a career full of memories, victories, and great feats. In 2004, Roethlisberger was part of an elite quarterback draft class, and was forced to watch Eli Manning, and Phillip Rivers walk up before his name was called. Out of the three of them, it wouldn’t be too hard to debate that Roethlisberger has had an all-around greater career.

The 12-year veteran has won two Super Bowls, and has visited 3. He became the youngest player in NFL history to win the big game, triumphing over the Seattle Seahawks back in 2005, in only his second season.

In fact, when Roethlisberger first hit the field in his rookie season, following an ineffective third quarter by Tommy Maddox, as well as an injury to both him, and quarterback Charlie Batch, ‘Big’ Ben won his first 13 games of his career, and won his first playoff game, finishing 2004 with a 14-1 record.

Yet, despite all of his accolades throughout his career, he has never once been named NFL MVP.

While to many, this isn’t a shock, us Steelers fans appreciate our Big Ben very much, and many would say that Roethlisberger is one of the more underrated quarterbacks in the league. People seem to refuse to recognize Ben as one of the premier passers in the game.

I will admit, and I’m sure I am not alone in this, but I will often scream at the television as I watch Roethlisberger scampering around the pocket, shedding tackles, pleading for him to throw it.

While he’s offered so many great episodes of his strength, and ability to extend the play, he’s also caused many grey hairs to grow upon heads of his fans, but we still love him.

What does Ben Roethlisberger have to do to win MVP?

He needs to have the best season of his career. Chances are, if the Steelers are to succeed this season, he’ll have to have one of his best seasons of his career, especially without Le’Veon Bell for two games, and Martavis Bryant for four.

If he can take the reigns of a team that is so lost defensively, and lead them to a solid campaign, including a playoff berth, while putting up stats similar to last season, it could be hard for those underrating Roethlisberger to deny him the trophy he deserves.

While Big Ben is by no means the best quarterback in the league, as much as we want to believe, plus the fact that he will have tough competition with the likes of Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers, J.J. Watt, and the resurfacing of Adrian Peterson this year, it wouldn’t be too surprising if Ben Roethlisberger took home the coveted award, and sealed his enshrinement in Canton.
