Before the players check into the dorms and strap the pads on for some training camp action let’s take a look at who are the most likely names you’ll see on the field against the Redskins on Monday, Sept. 12th.

The Steelers haven’t had a quiet offseason at all with the retirement of Heath Miller, the signing of Ladarius Green and they seemed to have released just about every player you would have thought was going to be coming into camp for a position battle.

The Steelers started off the summer of released players by designating cornerback Cortez Allen for a post-June 1st release in mid-April. They weren’t prepared to take any chances on whether he’d be healthy enough or could actually contribute effectively after several unproductive/injury plagued seasons.

The Steelers may have a competition for the starting left tackle position but Mike Adams definitely won’t be a part of it since he was released in early May.

After going through kicking struggles trying to replace the injured Shaun Suisham last season the Steelers stumbled upon a gem in Chris Boswell and with Suisham supposedly ready to come back there was a kicking competition on deck for camp.

However, Suisham never fully recovered from his ACL injury and the Steelers released him at the end of June, citing a failed physical.

When it wasn’t certain if the Steelers would keep veteran tight end Matt Spaeth around or move forward with youngster Jesse James to go along with Green they went ahead and released Spaeth a week before training camp opened.

There may be some position battles still left to be decided. Let’s predict who will start and who will be the backup when the real action kicks off.
