What We Learned This Week in the NFL Offseason:
- Patriots Hernandez still in hot water with police
- NFL Rookie Symposium kicks off in Cleveland
- Former Steelers HC Bill Cowher involved in a car accident in New York
- Art Rooney II proposes Pittsburgh as potential future host of NFL draft
If you’ve been following the story of New England Patriots TE Aaron Hernandez’s involvement in a murder investigation of an “associate” this past week, it’s pretty compelling stuff. There’s been conflicting reports on whether or not there has been a warrant issued for Hernandez’s arrest for obstruction of justice, as when completing their initial search of his home it was discovered that Hernandez had 1. A professional cleaning service scrub his home the previous day 2. His personal security system complete with video surveillance destroyed and 3. Smashed his cell phone into pieces before turning it into police. Hernandez is under suspicion of being involved in the murder of Odin Lloyd, a 27-year old local semi-professional football player whose body was found near the Hernandez home last week. Looks to me like Hernandez sought the advice of Ray McStabby Lewis and good ole Rogeez “The Commish” Goodell when the proverbial sh** hit the fan and found that destroying the evidence is the best way to go. It is unclear what the next step in this investigation will be but reports are that Hernandez has been asked by the Patriots coaching staff to stay away from team facilities and another police search of Hernandez’s home netted another 10-15 bags of evidence. Should be interesting to see how this is all going to play out, and how devastated Patriots fans will be not that there was a potential murderer on their team, but that poor little Tommy has just run out of TE’s to throw to.
The NFL has gathered the 2013 NFL Rookie class to Cleveland for their annual symposium to help transition the young men into the life of professional football. If that wasn’t depressing enough for them, just to be in Cleveland, they also had guest speakers explain to the group that the majority of rookies in the NFL will be out of the league in three years. This is to show to them that they need to make smart decisions both health-wise and financially, if they really want to make playing in the NFL their career. The symposium will also offer guest speakers such as Pacman Jones and Tank Johnson to my guess is scare the rookies straight about the downsides of having a permanent seat at their local gentlemen’s club or a private weapon’s arsenal they like to try to travel with. Hopefully someone will also explain to the rookies that they can’t always control their spot on the depth chart but they can 100% of the time control how many DUI’s they get and how many kids they have.
Everyone’s favorite former head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers, Bill Cowher, was involved in a minor car accident in New York City on Sunday afternoon. The analyst for CBS’s The NFL Today was cut off in his black Mercedes-Benz by a woman driving a Ford Fusion. Cowher hit the Fusion but no one was sent to the hospital. All of us yinzers know that if Cowher hadn’t hit the woman she was in store for a pretty nasty stare-down when Cowher would have been able to catch up and pass her for cutting him off. Nothing pisses off a yinzer quite like getting cut off in traffic. Glad to hear the coach is ok and is anyone else wondering if his black Mercedes-Benz had the Pittsburgh Steelers license plate holder in the back like we all have?
Steelers President Art Rooney II took some time this week to speak about a variety of topics, one of them being the NFL Draft and the potential to move it from Radio City Music Hall in New York City in future years. Rooney expressed interest in having the city of Pittsburgh possibly host the event someday. The draft has been held at Radio City and has been held the same weekend each year for a long time but will be moved to a different weekend in 2014 due to a scheduling conflict. That has opened up discussions for the potential to move the draft to different locations in the future. My favorite part of the draft is Rogeez getting booed each time he comes on stage. I can’t imagine how much better the fans in Pittsburgh will be at letting Rogeez have it than the fans in New York have been!
