The Steelers trimmed their roster from 90 to 75 earlier today when they released the following players according to the team’s website:

  • OT Mike Farrell
  • OT D’Anthony Batiste
  • WR David Gilreath
  • WR Tyler Shaw
  • WR J.D. Woods
  • CB Ryan Steed
  • LB Stevenson Sylvester
  • QB John Parker Wilson
  • RB Jeremy Wright
  • RB Baron Batch
  • TE Peter Tuitupou

In addition to the releases of those players, Pittsburgh’s brass placed the following injured players on the following lists:

  • ILB Sean Spence (Reserve/PUP)
  • OG Justin Cheadle (Waived/Injured)
  • CB DeMarcus Van Dyke (Waived/Injured)
  • DE Nick Williams (Reserve/Injured)

Overall, most of these moves did not surprise me.  The releases of Batch and Sylvester make sense, especially since neither prospect shined during their respective careers with the franchise.  I figured that J.D. Woods might make the practice squad, but I guess that Reggie Dunn, Justin Brown, and Derek Moye were the “bubble backups” who the Steelers’ coaching staff wanted to keep.  I will say that it is nice to see the team keeping Sean Spence around for one more year.  Another season of rehabilitation should help the inside linebacker, and I am rooting for the former Miami Hurricane to come back strong in 2014.
