Cornerback Should Be High on Pittsburgh’s ‘Wish List’ in 2014 NFL Draft

Future Starters and Depth Must Be Acquired

Although I believe that addressing the offensive tackle position will be Pittsburgh’s chief concern this offseason, it should not deter them from looking extremely hard at cornerback prospects on the second and third days of the NFL Draft.

Kyle Fuller of Virginia Tech, Aaron Colvin of Oklahoma, Darqueze Dennrd of Michigan State, and Ross Cockrell of Duke are all larger physical cornerbacks who could fit into Pittsburgh’s defensive scheme. In addition, Justin Gilbert of Oklahoma State and Deion Belue of Alabama are not only solid cornerbacks, but have kickoff and punt return experience as well. Of course, the only reason I’m mentioning that is because the Steelers have had people like Jonathan Dwyer deep on kickoff returns this fall.

Regardless of where they select a cornerback, Pittsburgh’s brass must focus on upgrading that position this offseason. The players on their roster are either older, expensive, unproven, or better suited to play different positions in the secondary.  Thus, I hope that Kevin Colbert & co. will find some personnel to bolster that position through the NFL Draft next May.
