After they placed Levi Brown and David Johnson on injured reserve this morning, the Steelers needed to fill two spots on their 53-man roster. According to the team’s official website, the Steelers’ brass promoted cornerback Isaiah Green from the practice squad and signed free agent tight end Richard Gordon.
The promotion of Green is not really a surprise, and every team around the league could stand to use depth at cornerback and on special teams. Green has bounced back and forth from the Steelers’ 53-man roster and practice squad this fall, but he has yet to actually see the field.
The former Fresno State Bulldog could be in the mix to contribute on special teams over the coming weeks, but he is unlikely to see time at cornerback unless a rash of injuries strike at the position.
Gordon, who fits the tight end/H-back mold (6’4″ 268 lbs.) like Johnson, should provide Pittsburgh with some adequate depth at tight end and fullback until Matt Spaeth can return from his foot injury.
Gordon recorded three catches for 11 yards and one touchdown during his two years in Oakland, and could be used in “heavy packages” near the goal line. The former Miami Hurricane will probably be used primarily on special teams though, and he made 17 tackles and recovered a fumble during his time on the coverage units with the Raiders.
