Todd Haley Raves About Kelvin Beachum

Even though he was considered by many to be the “afterthought” of the three offensive linemen selected by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 2012 NFL Draft (David DeCastro and Mike Adams were the other two), Kelvin Beachum has only seemed to impress the team’s coaching staff with each passing week.

Thrust into the starting left tackle role last weekend for the injured Levi Brown and the demoted Mike Adams, Beachum struggled at times, committed penalties, but still managed to hold down the fort enough at the position in which he started at during his collegiate days at S.M.U..

I for one have my doubts regarding whether or not Beachum possesses the necessary frame (6’2″ 300 lbs.) to succeed at the left tackle position. Moreover, I question whether or not a player of his specific build can consistently anchor against bull-rushes on the blind-side for extended periods of time.

Nevertheless, Beachum illustrated last weekend that he is the team’s best option to turn to in the interim at the most important position along their offensive line. Furthermore, the versatility he has put on display during the last six weeks of the regular season alone should secure him a spot on any NFL roster for the next decade.

Even if the Steelers decide to go in a different direction at the left tackle position for the 2014 season, it is still comforting for Todd Haley and the rest of the offensive staff to know that they have someone on their roster who can (and has) step in at any one of their six positions (including tight end) along their offensive front and provide a serviceable performance.
