The Steelers are living in the moment. Not looking too far ahead and definitely not spending any time dwelling on the past. Here’s what’s being said about your Pittsburgh Steelers around the block.

Tomlin Tuesday

Each Tuesday afternoon, Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin addresses the media to review the previous game, update injury statuses, preview the upcoming game, and answer questions. In this week’s twenty-three minute press conference, I counted 20 “Obviously’s. I also counted an “Obviously” in one of the reporters’ questions if that counts too. You can listen to Tomlin’s entire presser here.

Tomlin began the presser by thanking the fans at Heinz Field for their support for the game saying that the team doesn’t take it for granted considering how the season has gone so far. He then went into the injury statuses. Shamarko Thomas is classified as “out” at this point with a high ankle sprain. Brett Keisel has a foot injury, Ramon Foster has an ankle that’s considered less severe, and LaMarr Woodley has a calf injury. Tomlin said that they’d all be limited in the beginning of the practice week but so far only Thomas is out for the game against the Lions.

Tomlin broke down the Lions as if they were the giant aliens Michael Jordan and the Toon Squad played in Space Jam, but he has a tendency to do that when going over the opponents. Tomlin referred to Lions’ WR Calvin Johnson as the best receiver in the game and compared him to a young Randy Moss. He also spoke about the challenges the Steelers will face in dealing with Matthew Stafford and Reggie Bush. On top of that, the Steelers will have a tough time against the Lions 4-3 defense, including Ndamukong Suh who could do anything from sack Roethlisberger to  kick him in the junk so that’s a concern for sure.

Tomlin was asked about the teams’ attitude as they’ve now gone 3-2 since opening the season 0-4. He was asked to address the attitude of the team and how it has impacted over the past few weeks.

"“I think our attitude has been fine. I like the approach we take day-to-day in terms of how we come to work. I like the energy. But what we need is results. I expect the attitude to be what it is. It’s not like I am throwing a pep rally because the attitude is appropriate. We have a lot of challenges in front of us. This is something we sign up for and are called to do. It’s been appropriate.” – Mike Tomlin"

He was also asked if he wanted to add anything to the Roethlisberger trade rumors that both Art Rooney II and Roethlisberger himself have denied. Tomlin said that he wasn’t going to add any “legs” to an erroneous story and that he thought the matter was already dealt with appropriately. I think so too. It’s in the past now, along with the Bills win. Time to focus on the Lions.
