The Steelers had a practice squad spot open up this morning after they promoted Isaiah Green. Due to the fact that Green was promoted to replace the injured Curtis Brown, Pittsburgh was probably in the market for another cornerback to take Green’s place on their practice squad.

Thankfully for them, they were able to sign a somewhat familiar face in the form of Devin Smith according to the team’s official website.

An undrafted rookie out of the University of Wisconsin, Smith made Pittsburgh’s practice squad out of training camp and has been shuttled on-and-off of it four times this season. With Brown now scheduled to miss the rest of the season though, it looks like Smith will have a permanent home in the NFL for the rest of the 2013 campaign.

Smith (5’11” 186 lbs.) racked up five tackles and one interception during the preseason for the Steelers, and his play inspired the front office and coaching staff to keep him over two players with practice squad eligibility, Josh Victorian and rookie 5th round pick Terry Hawthorne.
