Omar Khan Likely to Stay in Pittsburgh For Another Year

It looks like the Pittsburgh Steelers will be able to retain their current director of football administration for at least one more season. According to Dan Hanzus of it was Dennis Hickey, not Omar Khan, who the Miami Dolphins hired as their new general manager earlier today.

Khan garnered buzz as a potential choice for the general manager job in Miami this winter, and the Dolphins’ brass even interviewed Khan for the job earlier this month. Luckily for the Steelers, Miami is going in a different direction with their decision and Pittsburgh will be able to keep Khan on board for the 2014 season.

Of course, Khan might not be with the Steelers beyond next year. The soon to be 37-year-old was a finalist for the New York Jets’ general manager job in 2013 and could very well be a potential general manager candidate after the 2014 campaign ends.

As sure as I am that the Steelers would like to keep their salary cap guru within their organization, it is hard to imagine that Khan will receive a shot to become the franchise’s general manager with the successful and tenured (2000-present) Kevin Colbert still holding that post.

As it stands, Khan is set to stay in Pittsburgh for at least one more season and that means that the Steelers will not have to search for a new director of football administration in addition to a new running backs coach.
