Pittsburgh Steelers Morning Huddle 3/7/14

This week has been quite an exciting week from the standpoint of a Pittsburgh Steelers fan. Here’s a recap of some of the roster moves made over the past couple weeks.

3 are Cut

Tyler Conway of Bleacher Report reported a few days ago that 3 Steelers players were cut. Larry Foote, Curtis Brown, and Levi Brown were the players. We all knew Levi Brown being terminated was coming, it was just a matter of when. Releasing him gives the Steelers much needed salary cap space. Releasing Curtis Brown was one not many saw coming. Brown has been nothing but a special teams players since he entered the league, and now leaves the Steelers thin at cornerback. This goes along with what I have said all offseason long that the Steelers will take a cornerback in the first round, and now they need one not only for future purposes, but for depth purposes also. Larry Foote is one of the veteran cuts we have seen the last couple years. This also goes along with what I have said, the Steelers are moving forward with their young inside linebackers, especially Vince Williams.

Will Allen is Back

Dave Bryan of Steelers Depot reported a few days ago that the Steelers have resigned safety Will Allen. This does come as a surprise to me, as I thought the Steelers would go into the new year with Troy Polamalu and Shamarko Thomas as the starters with Robert Golden and either a draft pick or free agent pickup for depth. With the addition of Allen, this tells me that the Steelers will not be signing any major free agent safeties, and maybe even not draft one in the first four rounds to eventually take over the free safety spot alongside Thomas. I am now hinting at this being Polamalu’s and Allen’s final seasons in Pittsburgh and that the Steelers will spend either a first or second round draft pick in the 2015 draft. However, Allen will probably not compete with Thomas for a starting spot, but rather compete with Robert Golden for playing time.

Lamarr Woodley out the door?

Andrea Hangst of Bleacher Report wrote a piece concerning Lamarr Woodley’s future in Pittsburgh now that Jason Worilds will be retained for another year and is closing in on a multi year contract with the Steelers. Overall, it seems like Hangst is leaning toward Woodley being a post June 1 cut by the Steelers, saving them money. This, again, goes along with what I have stated many times, Woodley’s future in Pittsburgh is about over. There is a slim chance he stays, but the Steelers have learned their lesson with letting young players sit on the bench behind veterans recently, and they don’t want to do that with Jarvis Jones who has beast material written all over him. Jason Worilds will be starting next year, and the plan was all along for Jones to start opposite him, so that leaves Woodley out.
