Well that didn’t take long. The Pittsburgh Steelers have signed WR Lance Moore to a 2-year contract Friday afternoon. The 30-year old receiver from the New Orleans Saints had been visiting the team this week. He was signed presumably to replace Jerricho Cotchery, who signed a 5-year contract with the Carolina Panthers.
Lance Moore was signed as an undrafted free agent in 2005 by the Cleveland Browns out of Toledo. He was later released and signed onto the New Orleans Saints’ practice squad. He made his first start for the Saints in 2007. He has 346 receptions for 4,281 yards and 38 career receiving touchdowns. His biggest breakout season was in 2012 where he caught 65 passes for 1,041 yards and 6 touchdowns. Last season he had only 37 receptions for 457 yards. Moore was a part of the Super Bowl XLIV winning squad in New Orleans.
The move provides the veteran on the WR corps, most likely to be the #3 receiver behind Brown and hopefully Markus Wheaton. This also allows the Steelers to add more youth to the receiving corps in the draft, while still having experience to work with Ben Roethlisberger.
I, for one, was all about the Steelers re-signing Jerricho Cotchery. Mostly because of the season he had last year, the fact that he seemed to want to come back and he seemed to be a good fit on the roster. However, when it came down to it, the money the Carolina Panthers were offering was just out of the Steelers’ league. The financial terms of Moore’s contract have not been released but Cotchery signed a 5-year deal with the Panthers and there was just no way the Steelers were offering that kind of length to a 30+ year old receiver. The 2-year deal for Moore clearly makes more financial sense and more sense in the long-term if the Steelers really are going to load up on receivers in the draft. I just hope it also makes sense on the football field as well.
What are your thoughts on the signing of Lance Moore to the Pittsburgh Steelers?
