The Pittsburgh Steelers have added depth to their running back corps Friday afternoon with the signing of LeGarrette Blount. ESPN is reporting that the Steelers signed Blount to a 2-year deal.
LeGarrette Blount was signed by the Tennessee Titans as an undrafted free agent in 2010 out of Oregon. Blount was suspended for the majority of the 2009 season at Oregon due to an incident in the opening game against Boise State where he punched an opponent and got into an altercation with fans of the Boise State fans.
Blount was picked up by Tennessee as an undrafted free agent in 2010 but was waived after making the 53-man roster. He was picked up by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers where his first NFL game was a 38-13 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers, ironically. Blount played 3 seasons for Tampa, earning 1,007 rushing yards his first year. He played a diminished role for the team once they acquired Doug Martin.
In April of 2013 Blount was traded to the New England Patriots where he rushed for 772 yards on 153 carries for the season. He scored 7 touchdowns and had 2 lost fumbles. He had a monster game in the playoffs against Indianapolis Blount rushed for 166 yards on 24 carries and scored four touchdowns, the second on the all-time list for rushing touchdowns in a playoff game.
The signing adds some depth to the Steelers running back corps which was pretty bare. The depth chart reads “Le’Veon Bell……..” so another guy who can carry the ball is definitely a luxury the Steelers couldn’t go into 2014 without.
