The 2014 NFL Draft is the focus for all teams at this point. Mock drafts are in full swing, reports of coaches attending pro days are surfacing, and so are the rumors of so-and-so being linked to this player for whatever reason. For the Pittsburgh Steelers, there are a still few free agency moves they could make. Here’s the latest new regarding the Steelers
Possible Restructure for Timmons
Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post Gazette reports that inside linebacker Lawrence Timmons could be in for a contract restructure soon in order to free up cap space. This has been news a long time coming, as Timmons contract could free valuable cap space at this point, with around $1 million left in cap space. The Steelers will get around $8 million after June 1 with the release of Lamarr Woodley, which will be used to sign their draft picks. With the rest of that money and a restructure of Timmons’ contract, an extension to several players could happen. Ben Roethlisberger, Maurkice Pouncey, Cameron Heyward, and Cortez Allen are all canidates for contract extensions in order to lock them up before they hit free agency.
Cornerback in the first?
If you have read any of my articles during the offseason, you will know I am all in on the Steelers taking a cornerback in the first round. I announce this about every post. Sorry readers. Bleacher Report seems to agree with me. Bleacher Report recently posted a video of how the Steelers could go for CB Darqueze Dennard from Michigan State in the first round. Dennard is one of two cornerbacks who are first round worthy, and Dennards worth is probably right around the 15th pick. Justin Gilbert from Oklahoma State is the other corner who is worth a first round pick, and if the two were available when the Steelers pick, Gilbert should be it, but I’m definitely not complaining with Dennard, as he would bring depth to a position that desperately needs it and brings what the Steelers like in a corner, physicality.
