Steelers season goes all year long so whether we’re breaking down free agency signings, predicting the possible draft choices, or looking around for mentions of your Black & Gold we’ve got you covered. Here’s what’s being said about your Pittsburgh Steelers around the block.

Tomlin and Colbert Pre-Draft Presser

Mike Tomlin and Kevin Colbert addressed the media Monday afternoon as part of their Pre-Draft coverage. Teresa Varley of the Steelers site highlights 5 major points regarding the Steelers’ strategy going into draft weekend the coach and general manager duo hit on during their conference. The points were:

  • Plenty of talent available (in the draft)
  • Don’t pass up on your guy
  • Style vs. scheme
  • Separating the talent
  • Free agency decisions

Colbert and Tomlin explained that with all the talent in this years’ draft, it’s important to take the player you like when he’s available and to pay attention to what kind of scheme the player was under in college and if his playing style lends him to adapt to different schemes. Also they noted that while the wide receiver and corner back positions are deepest in the draft, the talent is separated by whether or not the players were used in specific sides or situations while in college. You can watch the entire presser here.

Sean Spence clean bill of health

Scott Brown of ESPN notes that in addition to the draft strategy, Tomlin also noted that LB Sean Spence was given “a clean bill of health” and could figure into the linebacking corps for this season since he was sidelines in 2012 with a knee injury. Spence shredded several knee ligaments and had nerve damage following a 2012 preseason game that has kept him sidelined since.

"“We can’t wait to watch him take the next step in this process. Which is to play football.” – Mike Tomlin"

Steelers plans to trade pick?

Bob Labriola tweeted that the Steelers might only have an interest in trading down from the 15th spot, but only if they know what player they’d be missing out on and have no plans at all to trade up mostly because of the lack of a 3rd round pick. The Steelers’ only draft pick in the 3rd round is a compensatory pick which is not tradable.
