Steelers season goes all year long so whether we’re breaking down free agency signings, predicting the possible draft choices, or looking around for mentions of your Black & Gold we’ve got you covered. Here’s what’s being said about your Pittsburgh Steelers around the block.
Don’t expect immediate starters from draft picks
Although Kevin Colbert has said multiple times that he believes the 2014 NFL Draft is the deepest with talent that he’s seen in his 30 years in the league, he won’t go into it expecting an immediate starter to emerge. ESPN’s Scott Brown explains how the Steelers will maintain their conservative outlook for rookies, even in this talented draft, in spite of what yinzers think.
"“I don’t think we can say that there’s going to be an impact guy that’s going to come in and be a starter. I think they’ll certainly be able to compete and maybe to contribute in some of the sub-packages and they’ll continue to develop.” – Kevin Colbert"
Here’s what some yinzers will hear from that statement, “We’re just going to let the rookies rot on the bench and never play them out of spite and you can’t make us, nanny nanny doo doo!” In reality, the Steelers have had some immediate starters from their draft picks of recent years such as Maurkice Pouncey, Jarvis Jones, and Le’Veon Bell. Could be that it’s better to not expect them to come in and be starters right away, but if they emerge as starters by their performance in camp or preseason or early games, then you have yourself a rookie starter.
Roethlisberger wants someone who helps the Steelers get better
Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger stopped by the 93.7 The Fan afternoon radio show to share some thoughts on the draft and the Steelers outlook for 2014. He said that he’s got a wish list but will ultimately go with whoever the “high powers” decided can help the team.
"“Anything to help the team, 8-8 is not good enough. We have to get back to winning Super Bowls.” – Ben Roethlisberger"
Peter King’s Mock Draft
Always with a flair for the dramatics, SI’s Peter King released his mock draft just two days before the 2014 NFL Draft. He’s got some surprises in there, obviously to separate his from the gazillion other mock drafts that have been circulating with these extra two weeks of draft preparation. He’s got the Texans taking Khalil Mack with the first pick over Clowney or a quarterback. He’s also got the Steelers with an interstate trade giving up the 15th pick to Philadelphia for an additional 2nd round pick and the Steelers taking CB Kyle Fuller at the 22nd spot in the first round. Interesting.
