Pittsburgh Steelers Sign Fifth Round Draft Pick

The Steelers now have their fifth of nine draft picks signed to a contract. Thursday morning the Steelers announced that they have come to terms on a four-year deal with fifth-round pick CB Shaquille Richardson.

Financial terms of the deal haven’t been disclosed, as has been the case for the previous draft picks that have been signed already. It is worth noting that the Steelers now have five of the nine draft picks under contract before June 1st. Quite possibly a strategic move for them considering that they’ll receive additional cap space on June 1st when LaMarr Woodley’s deal is officially off the books.

Richardson was the 157th overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft out of the University of Arizona. The Steelers surprised many by waiting until the fifth round to address the cornerback position, a need some considered a top priority. Richardson’s college career included 189 tackles, 10 interceptions, 131 interception return yards, and 3 forced fumbles.

The Steelers will now focus on signing their top four draft picks which are Martavis Bryant, Dri Archer, Stephon Tuitt, and Ryan Shazier. I would expect the rest of the signings to be wrapped up next week. The Steelers are currently in their final day of the first session of OTA’s and will break for the weekend before resuming on June 3rd.
