Steelers Morning Huddle 6/4/2014

Steelers season goes all year long so whether we’re breaking down draft choices, recapping OTA’s, or looking around for mentions of your Black & Gold we’ve got you covered. Here’s what’s being said about your Pittsburgh Steelers around the block.

Steelers mindful of injury risks in OTA’s

The new CBA that went into effect in 2011 addressed a lot of possible scenarios for players to get injured in practices, therefore restricting the number of OTA’s, voluntary practices, minicamps, and extra practices teams are allowed to hold each season. Even with those kinds of precautions players like the Cowboys LB Sean Lee can lose an entire season to injury before any balls are kicked off. The Steelers are definitely attempting to minimize the risk of injury during their OTA’s says ESPN’s Scott Brown. After losing C Maurkice Pouncey last year 8 snaps into the season, the Steelers know how one injury can set off a domino effect that is hard to bounce back from. The goal of the Steelers 2014 OTA’s isn’t only to introduce the rookies and new free agents to Steelers football, it’s also to have everybody enter the season healthy and remain healthy the rest of the year.

Totes Arthur Moats

The Pittsburgh Steelers don’t just have new faces from the draft class learning the intricacies of the defense in OTA’s; they also have some new additions via free agency who are putting time into learning these next few weeks. That’s what LB Arthur Moats is doing, according to Teresa Varley. Moats had to learn three different defensive systems via coordinator changes during his four seasons with the Buffalo Bills so picking up a new scheme isn’t something new to him at all. In addition to learning Dick LeBeau’s defense, Moats is trying to pick up any and all information he can get from Steelers defensive assistant Joey Porter.

"“Any time you get a guy who has had that type of success in the NFL, who has been in this particular defense for that long, you are picking his brain at every chance you get. It helps to have a guy who has been out there and has played that position at a dominant level, so every time you come off the field he is able to give you positive criticism and let you know what you need to work on so you can continue to do well.” – Arthur Moats"

What’s Jeff Reed been up to?

I know, I was just thinking the same thing myself. Last time I was at Sheetz I instantly wondered what Jeff Reed has been doing these past few years. Apparently, he’s been coaching the Steelers Men’s Fantasy Camp at St Vincent College in Latrobe, according to RJ Schaffer of the PPG. What’s more, Reed hasn’t given up on his NFL dream either. He still thinks he can play and is holding out for a phone call any day now. He said he’s looked into playing Canadian or Arena football but doesn’t see the benefit financially considering all the work that goes into it. I know what he means. I’ve seen an arena football game and they score like every 15 seconds. That’s a lot of kicking. Keep the dream alive Jeff Reed, maybe it will work out one day for you.
