The Pittsburgh Steelers lost their first preseason matchup on Saturday night against the Giants.  Neither team looked brilliant (it’s the first preseason game why would they?), and there were large chunks of the game where even veterans seemed “rusty.”

There were some good things and interesting things that came out of the exercise.  Here are four takeaways from the game.

Jarvis Jones Goes Inside

Jones already matched his season sack total from last season when he wrapped up Eli Manning in the first quarter.  Big deal, it’s preseason and it doesn’t count, right?  Well the takeaway here is how he was able to wrap up Manning – by taking an inside line.  One of the biggest criticisms of Jones is that he only has speed and can only hope to gain an edge on the outside if he ever wants to see the backfield.

During the offseason, Jones worked hard on improving technique and getting stronger in order to work the inside on his blitzes.  It looks as if that regiment is paying dividends already, as Jones was able to beat his man on the inside attack and get to Manning quickly.  Granted, Jones angle of pursuit on Manning was a little harsh, but he was able to reach enough of Manning to take him down.
