Over the years that I have rooted for the Steelers, watching the roster cuts has always been painful. It seems good prospects end up getting cut where the team has definitive need for depth. However, in researching for this article, I realized how tough it must be for the coaches to cut a roster to 53 players. I have gone over the current 75 man roster three or four times, trying to figure out what the best combination for the team may be. Couple that with having to review hours of game film and practice evaluations makes the decisions even tougher.
Here are my thoughts on where the 53 man roster will end up.
Offense
QB | RB | FB | WR | TE |
Ben Roethlisberger | Le Veon Bell | Will Johnson | Antonio Brown | Heath Miller |
Bruce Gradkowski | LeGarrette Blount | Markus Wheaton | Matt Spaeth
Dri Archer | Lance Moore | Michael Palmer
Justin Brown | ||||
Darrius Heyward-Bey | ||||
Martavis Bryant |
Comments:
I think this is the end of the Landry Jones experiment, though if this scenario plays out maybe he stays on the practice squad. Though I don’t think Martavis Bryant has really earned a roster spot at this point, Rob Blanchflower really hasn’t either and I think that Bryant has more upside. The Steelers roll the dice with only three tight ends and six wide receivers.
