Steelers Game Day Grub: Pizza Burgers

facebooktwitterreddit

The Pittsburgh Steelers will try to go for four-in-a-row on Sunday afternoon against the Jets in a good, old fashioned early afternoon game. You know you’re going to be hungry and want some tasty treats to enjoy while watching to see if Ben Roethlisberger can top even his own astronomical performances over the past two weeks.

The city of New York, well the game is actually played in New Jersey but let’s just forget that for the moment, is quite possibly known best for pizza. So instead of just dialing up your favorite pizza place you can actually make something and impress your friends and yourself at the same time. Isn’t it better to show off anyway? Of course it is. Pittsburgh is known best for sandwiches so this is combining the best of both worlds and making a quite delicious game-day meal, if I say so myself.

My twin sister, Jenn, created these pizza burgers and they’re just delightful. She’s got quite a way around the kitchen and almost always nails it when creating something delicious. It’s the best of both worlds in terms of football snacks; combining pizza and burgers. Genius.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Your favorite meatball mix (preferably involving ground pork and/or Italian sausage)
  • Large pepperoni
  • Mozzarella/Provolone cheese
  • Pizza sauce
  • Hamburger buns

You’re going to mix your meatball mix as you would if you were making a large batch of spaghetti and meatballs but instead you’re making them into patties and enjoying these delicious pizza burgers. If your meatball mix doesn’t include pork or sausage, you’re doing it wrong. I don’t intend to be a food snob here by any means, just pointing out that meatballs should not just be beefballs. Hehe beefballs. Ok, moving on.

Pepperoni Pizza Burger

Form your patties and griddle or grill them to your desired doneness. Bobby Flay says to put a thumb-print dimple in the middle of the patty so they cook evenly and stay in the patty shape instead of a giant wad of meat. Who am I to argue with him? While you’re doing this you’re also going to want to get a sauté pan heated up for the pepperoni. You’re going to fry the pepperoni. You read that correctly. You won’t need oil or anything in the pan because the pepperoni has enough fat in it already but you’ll want to just crisp them up till they’re like tasty pepperoni chips. Also, take the time to butter and toast your buns. They love being buttered and toasted and you’ll love your burgers more for it. Melt your mozzarella/provolone combo over your hamburgers and get ready to assemble.

Assembly couldn’t be simpler. You start with the bun; you top it with your cheesy meatball burger and then throw some crispy pepperonis on top. Put some pizza sauce on the top bun and put your pizza burger together. Delicious. You can add other pizza toppings like mushrooms and peppers and all that junk but I don’t care for that so you can just keep that to yourself. Go ahead and tuck a napkin in your collar so you don’t get sauce all over your jersey. It’s perfectly acceptable to do as a grownup.

Enjoy the game and the grub!
