Seems like every year the Steelers are always about to go into the free agency period with salary cap issues. Well this year really isn’t the case. Ed Bouchette of the PPG weighs in on some moves the Steelers could make to improve their cap position even more. The 2015 NFL salary cap is projected to be at least $140 million and could be as much as $143 million. Bouchette suggests some cuts the Steelers can make to improve their position and free up even more space.
He suggests cutting Troy Polamalu after June 1st, similar to what they did with LaMarr Woodley but this time will give them $6 million in cap savings. He also suggests the cutting of Brett Keisel, Cam Thomas and Lance Moore to total $11 million in cap space. Extending/restructuring Ben Roethlisberger’s contract, which is expected, should reduce his cap hit for the year and free up even more space. We’ll definitely be playing close attention to see how the next few weeks and months play out but if you’re worried about the Steelers and salary cap room, you just haven’t been paying attention.
