The Steelers’ coaching staff seemed pleased enough with Josh Harris’ play last fall to promote him from the practice squad after LeGarrette Blount’s departure. If Pittsburgh’s brass are looking to add some competition to the mix for their second-year back, then a late-round draft pick could be something that the team explores in April.

A sturdy-framed back with good vision and cut-back ability, John Crockett (6′ 217 lbs.) would be a tremendous fit in Pittsburgh and provide some depth to a relatively thin position.

After two seasons in an incredibly productive backup role (2012-2013: 384 carries, 2,315 yards, 20 touchdowns), Crockett’s first season as North Dakota State’s feature back blew those two seasons out of the water. Overall, the exuberant running back, who is nicknamed “Taz” after the cartoon Tasmanian Devil, rushed for 1,994 yards on 368 carries and 21 touchdowns in 2014. In addition to those numbers, Crockett also proved to be a reliable target in the passing game as a senior when caught 30 passes for 397 yards and another touchdown.

In terms of potential concerns, Crockett had a tremendously heavy workload in only three seasons with the Bison. In addition, his upright running style, the quality of competition he faced in the FCS division and some ball security issues will all be questions which Crockett will face when teams consider drafting him.

At this juncture of his career, Crockett would be best suited to go to a team in need of a backup running back and special teams contributor. The Steelers fit this particular bill, and I believe that both parties would be a nice match with a fifth or sixth round choice.
