The Steelers are in dire need of adding a veteran cornerback and/or outside linebacker to their roster prior to the draft.

The fact that they haven’t is a little mind numbing. Sure the Steelers have a reputation of never making a big splash early in free agency. They don’t get caught up in the huge contracts thrown at players who may not necessarily warrant that kind of cash.

The pickin’s are slim, however, in a barrel that was already rather shallow to draw from.

That’s more than likely why the Steelers front office didn’t enter the fray during the first week except to only bolster the backup running back position.

The money was certainly there to make a move. $7-13 million in cap space isn’t really an argument for why they chose to keep the vault closed. It’s obvious that Colbert & Co. felt that there was no reason (nor player really) to help make it rain.

As frustrating as that was to watch free agent corner/OLB after free agent corner/OLB get signed, the Steelers continued to sit on their hands. Art Rooney II mentioned in a statement that we shouldn’t expect to see any significant signings to come via free agency before the draft.

I find that incredibly hard to believe (or want to believe, maybe). The needs at CB and OLB are so glaringly big that the Steelers need something to happen in free agency. After all, they could still lose Antwan Blake to a tendered offer making that three cornerbacks off of last year’s roster – Ike Taylor, Brice McCain, and Blake.

So let’s take a look at the top of the slim pickings in what traditionally becomes quipped by me as the Steelers Free Agency Sloppy Seconds. Proceed with caution – it doesn’t get any prettier from here.
