Harris (age 25) was drafted by the Texans back in 2011 and played there for three seasons before being cut at the end of their preseason. The Tennessee Titans picked him up off waivers, and Harris played in 11 games. The Titans are letting him test the market.

Harris was greeted with much fanfare when the team traded up for him in the second round of the 2011 draft. That was pretty much the highlight of his career in Houston. The ‘light’ never really came on for Harris as he tried to figure out what it meant to move from the collegiate level to the NFL.

He faired well in in the games he played for Tennessee, but the Titans decided to let him test the market while they pursued bigger fish such as re-signing Derrick Morgan.

Harris has the raw skills to be a solid corner – natural hip turns, speed, pursuit, and a nice ability to tackle. All things that the Steelers need in their corners. Much like his draft brother, Cortez Allen (2011, 4th round), there’s real potential. Just a lack of execution.

In no way am I advocating that Harris get signed and placed at the #2 position. I do think that at a bargain price, Harris can add depth and special teams. The Steelers will more than likely continue to play out of their base and go with a bunch of nickel looks.

If William Gay needs to move to the outside for a long stretch of the season, Harris could be a very effective nickel back.
