Cam gets paid

Cam Newton became a member of the $100+million club last week when the Carolina Panthers signed him to a five-year, $103.8 million extension with $67.6 million earned in the first three years. Newton’s deal sets the bar for upcoming contract talks for players like Russell Wilson and Eli Manning either this season or next.

Newton led the Panthers to a 7-8-1 record that actually resulted in a playoff berth because the rest of the NFC South was even crappier than that. It’s getting to the point in the NFL where quarterbacks are getting these contracts not for being great and for producing results for their team, but for not being crappy and forcing them to think about drafting a quarterback each year.

Congratulations! Thank you for not being Ryan Fitzpatrick or Brian Hoyer, here’s $100 million contract.
