Pre-Training Camp Analysis: Running Backs
Bob Labriola continues his series of pre-camp position break downs and just like the quarterbacks there’s no competition for the No. 1 spot in the running back corps. The Steelers will undoubtedly have to prepare for games without their star back in Le’Veon Bell because of his suspension.
Behind Bell, it gets interesting. The Steelers lone free agent signing this spring was DeAngelo Williams, a 10-year veteran from the Carolina Panthers. From everything we’ve seen so far Williams figures to be the anti-LeGarrette Blount, willing to play whatever role is needed of him on the team and not necessarily expecting to be a part of a 1-2 punch running back tandem.
Steelers offensive coordinator Todd Haley has a lot of youth behind that 10-year veteran to choose from when rounding out the roster spots.
"“Getting a seasoned veteran like DeAngelo in here is a good thing. He has played a lot of snaps and a lot of football. You can see it in how he carries himself. He is showing leadership to some of the younger guys. But at the same time I like our young guys who are developing.” – Todd Haley"
It will be interesting to see how the roster shakes out from camp. Doesn’t seem like Haley is ready to move on from the project that is Dri Archer but there has to be more to the group as far as depth than just him. Josh Harris has a lot to prove for himself in camp as well.
AFC North Hot Seat
ESPN’s AFC North roundtable is at it again and their question this time is who (player, coach or front office staff) might be on the hot seat this season. Everyone was in unison that Cleveland Browns GM Ray Farmer should feel some warmth coming from his chair.
His gamble on Johnny Manziel hasn’t paid off and the fact that the Browns have had two first-round picks in the past two drafts should have put them in a better spot to get out of the basement of the AFC North, but it isn’t likely that this is the season they’ll do it.
Interestingly, Browns’ writer Pat McManamon is in complete denial of the turnover rate for the team he writes for and thinks the Steelers’ defensive coordinator Keith Butler will be on the hot seat in his very first season in the role; taking over for Dick LeBeau.
Party in Latrobe!
The Pittsburgh Steelers will check into the dorms of Saint Vincent College for their 50th season of training camp in Latrobe and the party gets started the very next day. See what the team has planned for the celebration for fans attending training camp on Sunday, July 26th.
