Backs on backers

The pads are on in Latrobe and one of the drills that is the most entertaining to watch at Steelers training camps is the running backs vs. the linebackers. On the first practice with pads Mike Prisuta explains that linebacker Vince Williams blasted running back DeAngelo Williams flat on his back in a hit that looked worse than it actually was.

"“I just set him up with a swim move and then the second time he kind of sat down on the swim move and I kinda ran right through him. It wasn’t really that hard. I kinda just pushed him over.” – Vince Williams"

Williams downplayed the hit and reminds us that there will be a lot of times during training camp when one player will get the best of another and it’s all part of the process.

"“DeAngelo’s a good player, it’s a great drill, I just got the best of him. I’m pretty sure he’s going to get the best of somebody today. That’s just how it is, the ebb and flow of football.” – Vince Williams"

Beachum deal in the works?

The Steelers might not be done with their contracts before the regular season kicks off. We all know that the organization has a long-standing policy of not negotiating contracts once the season begins but on Thursday ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reports that the Steelers have entered preliminary contract talks with left tackle Kelvin Beachum.

Beachum, a former seventh-round draft pick, is in the last year of his rookie contract and is the most likely candidate for an extension now that Ben Roethlisberger and Cameron Heyward have been locked down.

Blount fails physical

Le’Veon Bell may be sporting one of the most chiseled physiques in the NFL right now with his 2.9% body fat but his former airport car-pool buddy seems to be carrying around a little extra baggage. Josh Alper of PFT reports that former Steelers running back LeGarrette Blount failed the conditioning test when he reported to New England Patriots training camp.

He was supposed to run 20 sprints of 50 yards in under eight seconds and only got to twelve. He’ll have to attempt it till he can complete it before he’ll be activated off of the Patriots’ physically unable to perform list.
