Let’s knock them down a peg or two

If kicking off the regular season against the Patriots doesn’t already get the Steelers fired up, the fact that they’re the defending Super Bowl champs sure takes it up a notch. Also, given that the Patriots are celebrating getting Tom Brady back from suspension doesn’t lessen the intensity either.

Steelers’ Teresa Varley got some players to weigh in on the upcoming matchup. Defensive captain Cameron Heyward is looking forward to knocking the Patriots off of their throne.

"“We just have to focus on the task at hand. We know we are going into a hostile place. We know they won a Super Bowl last year. They are the reigning champs. You want to knock them off their throne.” – Cam Heyward"

Belichick and Roethlisberger; comedy duo

Ben Roethlisberger and Bill Belichick exchanged some jokes at each other in a conference call between the two teams ahead of Thursday’s regular season opener. Mike Reiss of ESPN says Belichick started it with a crack about Big Ben’s size. He was asked about the challenge of tackling Ben, who is listed at 241 pounds.

"“Yeah, he was probably that in the eighth grade. He’s all of 241, trust me.” – Bill Belichick"

Roethlisberger clarified Belichick by saying he graduated high school at 185 pounds but played along anyway.

"“I guess I should take that as a compliment from coach Belichick. Not being around him all that much to know whether it is his humor or him being serious, but I guess that’s a compliment coming from him. Any time you can get, even if it’s a legit compliment or a backhanded compliment, whatever you can get from coach Belichick, you have to take it.” – Ben Roethlisberger"

Roethlisberger followed that up by calling Belichick a “genius” and Belichick responded playfully.

"“That sounds like Ben buttering us up pretty good. Half these guys have never played against him.” – Bill Belichick"

They’ll be here all week, folks. Well, at least till Thursday.

Contract restructure

According to Gerry Dulac of the PPG the Steelers have restructured the contract of Pro Bowl linebacker Lawrence Timmons. Timmons’ base salary of $6.63 million was converted into a signing bonus, creating an additional $3.32 million in salary cap room for the team.

Wonder what they’re going to do with all that cap room? Extension for Kelvin Beachum perhaps?
