Steelers News: Rooney, Jones, playoffs

The Steelers will definitely be enjoying their bye week after a home win over the Browns and having more injuries this season than anyone can keep track of. While the team ices up their bumps and bruises during the bye we’ll be busy looking for mentions of your Black & Gold so we’ve got you covered. Here’s your Steelers Morning Huddle for Wednesday, Nov. 18th.

The Steelers announced on Tuesday

that they have renewed their partnership with UPMC Sports Medicine and the University of Pittsburgh and in the partnership the practice/training facilities used by both the Steelers and University of Pittsburgh football teams will be renamed the UMPC Rooney Sports Complex to honor Steelers chairman Dan Rooney.

Bob Labriola explains that it was Dan Rooney’s vision over fifteen years ago for the Steelers to partner with the University of Pittsburgh and the medical center to create a sports training facility that would be the model to which all others would be based on.

"“The alliance between a major medical institution with its sports medicine capacity and a championship football team in the Pittsburgh Steelers is very much the vision of Dan Rooney. It was his vision 15-20 years ago along with Dr. Freddie Fu that created what, as Steelers President Art Rooney II pointed out, was entirely unprecedented. And basically it spelled the future for the way sports – professional sports and college sports and amateur sports – are handled in this modern age.” – UMPC President and CEO Jeffrey Romoff"

In case anybody was wondering

I’m sure he’ll be fine. Mark Kaboly of the Trib reports that Steelers quarterback Landry Jones is set to have an MRI done on his left ankle. There was no report on when the scan will take place or if anyone is even paying attention to Landry anymore since Ben Roethlisberger stepped in for him and reminded us that we don’t even want to think about life beyond him yet.

Playoffs? Who said anything about playoffs?

The Steelers head into their bye week with a tentative playoff spot and thanks to the Houston Texans, only a 2.5 game deficit behind the Cincinnati Bengals. Based on what lies ahead of them once they return, what are the Steelers’ chances to make the playoffs?

Next: Can the Steelers make the playoffs?

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler broke it down to three reasons why the Steelers will make the playoffs and the first one is directly based on what, and who, lies ahead of them. When the schedule was released in May we all took a look at the schedule after the bye week and winced a little knowing they’ll be facing the Seahawks, Colts and Broncos on top of the rest of their division, with four of their final six games on the road. But, these opponents don’t look so unbeatable now.
