Steelers: All-Time Greats
By Jack Tolman
The Pittsburgh Steelers have had a rich history full of championships, historic plays, and countless Hall of Fame careers from an array of superstar players that have led the Steelers to have a league best 6 Super Bowl championships.
The following is a list comprised of what I believe to be the best player out of each position group in the Steelers lengthy history.
Quarterback: Ben Roethlisberger (2004-Current)
The first position group may actually be one of the hardest to choose. While there isn’t quite the cast of special players like some of the other positions, this position boasts two quarterbacks that have an irreplaceable impact on the franchise.
In one corner, Terry Bradshaw reeled in the Steelers first 4 championships, while Roethlisberger has only won 2.
The thing that makes Roethlisberger special is that he has managed to succeed no matter who has surrounded him, and has only improved with age. Back in the ’70s, when Bradshaw was the man, he stuck with the same guys for his entire career, unlike Ben who has had new receivers with each passing year.
He has also managed to break almost every Steelers record, and has been the face of the franchise for years. Unlike Bradshaw, Ben isn’t backed by the Steel Curtain, and not even Blitzburgh. Today, he still manages to lead the Steelers well with one of worst defenses in the league.
With a few more years left in his Hall of Fame worthy career, Roethlisberger has a chance to cement himself as the greatest quarterback in Pittsburgh’s history, and one of the greatest in the league all-time.
Honorable Mention(s): Terry Bradshaw
