Steelers: All-Time Greats
By Jack Tolman
Running Back: Jerome Bettis (1996-2005)
This position wasn’t much easier. The Steelers have had some great running backs over time, including Franco Harris, Barry Foster, Rocky Bleier, and currently Le’Veon Bell.
However, out of all those running backs, one player stood out beyond all; Jerome Bettis.
Bettis’ Hall of Fame career was one of the most amazing in the history of the NFL. He racked up over 10,000 yards rushing with Pittsburgh, and plowed into the end zone 78 times.
Unlike most running backs, Jerome Bettis was no speed machine, but he managed to carry his 250lb body with surprising velocity, and a whole ton of power. This combination led to him being virtually unstoppable, and got him the nickname, “The Bus”.
Jerome Bettis finished his career with a Super Bowl win in 2005, and was a huge part of the championship team.
Bettis stands as the 2nd leading rusher in Steeler history, just behind Harris, and leads the Steelers in rushing yards per game, and also fumbled only 28 times compared to Harris’ 90 fumbles.
Finally, this year, The Bus made its final stop in Canton, where Bettis was invited into the Hall of Fame. His speech was one to remember, and no one will ever forget him whipping out the terrible towel, and chanting “Here we go Steelers, Here we go!” with the adoring crowd.
He has left a great mark on this franchise, and will be remembered for a long time. It’ll interesting to watch the career of Le’Veon Bell, and see where he places by the end of his career.
