The Steelers seemingly had control over a low scoring game until a late fumble swung the momentum and the score in Denver’s favor.
For the most part of the game the Steelers defense stood strong against Peyton Manning and the Broncos offense and kept them out of the end zone until the fourth quarter.
In the end the Broncos defense was just too much for the Steelers offense to overcome. Without their top wide receiver in Antonio Brown and top running back in DeAngelo Williams the Steelers got a huge contribution from Martavis Bryant in both the receiving and running game.
Unfortunately, during a drive where the Steelers looked almost assured to end in points in the fourth quarter running back Fitzgerald Toussaint was hit by Broncos safety Bradley Roby who knocked the ball loose and was recovered by DeMarcus Ware.
The Broncos would take over and lead a scoring play of 13 plays for 65 yards that resulted in a touchdown to put the Broncos ahead 20-10. The Steelers would get the ball back but their drive would end on a sack of Ben Roethlisberger by DeMarcus Ware.
The Broncos would go on to kick a field goal to go up 23-10. The Steelers would kick a field goal to come within seven but it was too little too late.
The Broncos advance to the AFC Championship with the 23-16 win and host the New England Patriots for the right to advance to Super Bowl 50.
Martavis Bryant had a hell of a game with 9 catches for 154 yards and he also led the team in rushing with two carries for 40 yards. Ben Roethlisberger went 24-of-37 for 339 yards no touchdowns and no interceptions.
It was a gallant effort by the men in Black & Gold. There were just too many injuries to overcome. If this team had a healthy Le’Veon Bell, Maurkice Pouncey, DeAngelo Williams and Antonio Brown who knows how far they could have gone.
Hopefully we’ll find out next season.
Here we go Steelers! Here we go!
