Steelers Draft 2016: McShay Mocks CB Mackensie Alexander at No. 25
By Kim Myers
The Steelers have 57 days and several hours before they’re on the clock for the 25th pick in the 2016 NFL Draft.
So many things can happen from then until now but one this is certain; there will be mocks-a-plenty from now until then.
ESPN’s NFL Draft guru Todd McShay released his third mock for the draft season and it includes the Steelers selecting a cornerback in the first round for the first time since 1997.
Before you can say Kendall Fuller or Eli Apple there’s a new name on the block. Clemson cornerback Mackensie Alexander has entered the sights for the Steelers’ target with the 25th pick in the draft.
McShay lists the positives for Alexander to be that he’s quick, instinctive and a good all-around player.
The downside which can’t be ignored is that he’s 5’10” and caught zero interceptions in college. That’s a big downside, if you ask me. What Alexander lacks in size he certainly makes up for in confidence, telling SI’s Chris Burke that he’s the best corner in the draft class.
"“I’m 22 but I’m ready. And I’m ready to compete with anybody, there’s nobody more dedicated than me, who’s put more time, who’s more of a competitor than me. … I’m here prepared and I’m telling you I’m the best corner in this draft class.” – Mackensie Alexander"
Yes, but can you cover Antonio Brown?
The Steelers interviewed Alexander during the combine so they must have some level of interest in him. McShay also suggested Houston CB William Jackson III as a possible choice instead of Alexander. Jackson vaulted himself into first-round talk after an impressive outing at the NFL Scouting Combine.
The Steelers might have hit the jackpot this year with the defensive backs largely considered to be the best of the draft class outside of the interior defensive lineman.
