This could be a long shot. Weddle looks to be a highly coveted free agent even at the age of 31. The reason why the Steelers should be willing to negotiate with the safety is that he fits in almost perfectly with what the Steelers want to do defensively.

Weddle is versatile and has cover skills as well as power for tackling. Weddle could compliment Mitchell at safety the likes of which Steelers fans haven’t seen since the days of Troy Polamalu and Ryan Clark in their prime.

Weddle wouldn’t necessarily be the long-term solution at strong safety for the Steelers since he is 31 but since Shamarko Thomas clearly hasn’t panned out he could be the safety the team needs while they have this short window of offensive firepower.

Weddle’s asking price could be out of the Steelers’ range but he could also be lured into playing for a legit contender. Weddle’s got every right to try to get all the money he can get as this will probably be the last big contract he signs of his career but after playing all that time with a mediocre team like San Diego perhaps he’d rather have an actual shot at a Super Bowl with the Steelers.

Could Weddle make the difference in the Steelers’ secondary if they don’t go for a big-time corner?
